January is National Mentoring Month!

  • ASE Monthly Networking Event at The Octa-Tetra Museum (with a virtual option too) is on January 11th.
  • January 14thTo celebrate Dream Week 2023: Citizenship Ceremony for children and their families, with keynote speaker Clarke Finney (private ceremony in partnership with USCIS). Clarke will then lead a public reading of their book The Perfect Mix for all Guests, with associated activity to celebrate diversity.

    • “The Impact of STEM Role Models and Mentors” Webinar by National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) on January 26th at 5 pm CST. NGCP is celebrating National Mentoring Month in January by highlighting the importance of mentors in empowering girls and young women to actively pursue STEM education and careers. Participants will learn from a panel of STEM professionals and the young women and girls they are mentoring. Speakers will share their journeys and advice on how mentoring can be a tool for supporting sustained career success in STEM.

    • EngineerGirl: Better Great Achievements Writing Contest. The 2023 contest encourages youth to write an essay demonstrating how female and/or non-white engineers have contributed to or can enhance achievements in engineering. Guidelines are provided for elementary, middle school, and high school grade levels. Submission deadline is February 1st.

Join STEM stakeholders from across Region 13 to network, learn and get inspired to connect our PreK-12 students to real-world learning experiences that foster their creativity, build critical thinking skills, and engage them in collaboration with their peers and the broader community. ESC Region 13 is hosting a two-day event intended to help the Greater Austin STEM Ecosystem learn about the Texas Education Agency’s vision for STEM education and the STEM-related changes to future state education standards, as well as to showcase the great work all of our stakeholders are doing to advance STEM education.     • Mark your calendars for STEM Girl Day at UT Austin! This year’s Girl Day includes “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” and the Girl Day STEM Festival. #UTGirlDay 2023 will be held February 25th. Elementary and middle school students, families, and educators are invited to attend and enjoy free, hands-on STEM activities on The University of Texas at Austin campus.UT Austin’s national award-winning STEM Girl Day, presented by Women in STEM in the Division on Diversity and Community Engagement gives K-8 students a chance to explore STEM through grade-appropriate, hands-on activities hosted by scientists, engineers, astronomers, mathematicians and other STEM enthusiasts from student organizations, research centers, corporate partners and community organizations. Viva Science SA is a free and family-friendly event that features a distinguished speaker, interactive science booths with fun activities for all ages, a science fair with posters by local scientists, science-themed artwork, delicious food trucks and much more.Viva Science SA is designed to enlighten, engage, and excite people of all ages in the San Antonio community by displaying science in an entertaining fashion.

      The event is being led by The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Health San Antonio and graduate student leaders with the support of all schools at UT Health San Antonio and our partners in the community.

      The goal of this initiative is to foster engagement between our (and your) scientists and the general public while showcasing the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to San Antonio’s economic and cultural development.

    • April 10th is the annual BexarFest! This is the only multimedia event of its kind that pairs high school media production students (STEAM) with local nonprofit organizations to create outreach materials for the nonprofit to use in its marketing campaigns.     April 16-22

    • April 21-22 is the annual Alamo City Electrathon (ACE) Race at the Freeman Expo Hall A and Lot 9. Teams will go through a series of an electrical, mechanical, driver, and dynamic inspections on Friday, April 21, before race day on April 22. On race day, teams will participate in two one-hour races, and the team with the most laps combined from the two races wins.       Stipends of $500 are available on a first-come, first-served basis to individuals who fulfill the requirements of the AspireIT evaluation program, which consists of collecting and sharing specific evaluation data for your computing experience(s) or program(s). Please carefully read through the AspireIT Evaluation Stipend Guidelines to help you determine if you are eligible to request a stipend and ensure that you collect all of the evaluation data you need to share with NCWIT.     July 24-27, 2023 9:00am – 3:00pm at the Scobee Education Center at SAC

    The Scobee Teachers Academy is a free fully sponsored four-day professional development workshop for K-8th grade public school classroom teachers at Scobee on July 24-27, 2023.  Academy activities will meet pre-mission teacher training requirements for Challenger and Micronaut missions, provide eclipse activities and content, easily accessible engineering design challenges, and we have verified with NASA that Rick can provide teacher Apollo lunar & meteorite sample disk certification training.  Participating teachers will be certified to borrow the lunar & meteorite disks from NASA and will earn 24 CPE credits at the conclusion of the academy.  

    Registration is still available on the Scobee web site and through social media alerts.  The registration flyer was included in the April ASE Folder with a QR Code for the registration link.

    NISD has provided funding for their teachers to receive a stipend for participation, but you must work through NISD district personnel for these logistics.
